Sanya is the vernacular name for a district full of cheap hostels, in an area of less than two square kilometers located in the northern part of Tokyo.

Sanya is one of the three major flophouse (“doya”) quarters of Japan, the other two being Kamagasaki in Osaka and Kotobuki-cho in Yokohama. (“doya” is a self-discriminatory term referring to extremely shabby flophouses, reversing the normal Japanese word for hostel [“yado”])
