Documentary Art Asia hosts new exhibitions many times per year at our own galleries in Chiang Mai & in Burma, plus at many other venues around Asia. The space is available to photographers working on in-depth documentary projects which focus on Asia or Asian communities around the world.
DocArtsAsia shows largely the work of Asian photographers but encourage submissions from photographers and curators from any background.

The two story gallery space in Chiang Mai has 25 fixed spaces to show work, with 20″x30″ frames and 16″x 24″ frames.

A full month exhibition including space rental, prints, frame rental, promotional poster design & printing, opening party with food & paid advertising is totally free for most exhibitions.
Q – I’m not sure if my work is documentary?
A – At DAA we show a wide gamut of what documentary work can be. Much wider than what most people think of a straight photojournalism. Best to look at our past exhibitions to get a sense if your proposed works might fit.
Q – What happens to the prints after the show?
A – We generally store them with possible future exhibition in mind – for example at the CDAF festival we showed three images from every show our first year. Other galleries sometimes re-exhibit bodies of work DAA curated and printed. When photographers wish, we give them the prints or destroy them (depending on the request). If the photographer would like the prints mailed, we ask them to cover the costs.
Q – How do print sales work?
A – 50% goes directly to the photographer. The remaining 50% goes to directly supporting DAA projects such as our library and artist in residence program. DAA is not for profit and currently has no paid staff.
We generally sell at our set gallery price, but are flexible when asked by artists to change the selling prices.
Q – How long will my work be displayed?
A – Generally one month – we hang the photos on the first Wednesday of the month and have the opening party the following Friday. The exhibition ends four weeks later when the next work is hung.
Q – What happens to the image files of my photos?
A – Option one – the artist chooses to include the exhibited body of work in the DAA agency. We will market and licence them to magazines and elsewhere and share the profits. This also includes selling prints throughout the year at our gallery and events. Details on the agency page.
Option two – We erase all files as requested.
