LIKE WE DON’T EXIST

SYNOPSIS

Since 1947, the Burmese military has waged a brutal civil war against multiple ethnic communities including the Karen, Kachin, and most recently the Rohingya.

For the Karenni, an ethnically diverse group of 9 hill tribes from Southeastern Burma, attacks from the army became routine. Villages were torched, women were raped, and families were impoverished from living a life on the run.

Thousands of Karenni are now faced with an impossible choice: to live as a refugee without rights or citizenship, or to attempt to return to their war-torn homeland. For decades they resisted, hoping that one day their ancestral sovereignty would be recognized.

This is the story of the Karenni people. http://likewedontexist.com
